Our shipping rate updates on the 25th March introduced a a few new things, aside from the general price increase for our current services. 

In addition to the previous shipping options available you'll now have access to: 

  • Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded to UK.
  • New lightweight rate to UK.
  • Tiered pricing for Courier to Europe. 
  • Much cheaper rates for shipping to USA. 

These new services have been introduced to offset price increases, and in most cases the new rates are cheaper than the before the update! 

How does this affect my current shipping rates?

If you take no action, nothing will change and your shipping rates will still work as they currently do. Your customers will be charged the same rate on your store, and if your rates are set to match ours you will lose a little money on the shipping costs since we'll be charging you the new rates. 

This means there's no major rush — take your time, consider whether or not you want to add the new rates to your store, and go from there. That being said, we'd definitely recommend adding the new rates since they offer cheaper shipping options for your customers. 

Updating your current WooCommerce shipping rates

If we break it down, there are six things we need to add/update/do to take full advantage of the new rates: 

  • Increase shipping costs to match the new Inkthreadable costs;
  • Add the Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded services;
  • Add the new lightweight rates for UK;
  • Update current product weight values for lightweight rates; 
  • Add the new European zones and rates; and
  • Add the new shipping rates for the USA.

Updating your shipping rates in line with Inkthreadable's update

The price increase means we'll now charge slightly more for the the shipping options we offered before the update, and this may or may not affect you depending on how you prices your shipping rates when you set them up. 

For example, if you rounded up to the nearest whole Pound, you'd be charging £2 for a single t-shirt to the UK based on our old rate of £1.50. The new rate for a single t-shirt to the UK is £1.57, and if you were to round up to the nearest Pound it would still be £2. 

Since shipping costs are subjective and different from customer to customer, there's no one right way to detail updating your costs — it will be up to you to review the new costs and decide how much to charge your customers. You can find all shipping costs detailed on our Shipping Costs page. Take some time to review these costs before updating!

Updating your rates for UK, including adding the new lightweight rates, and the new rates for Royal Mail 48 & 48 Recorded

Once you know what you want to charge your customers, head to the Settings tab of your WooCommerce dashboard, then click the Shipping tab on the top menu.

You'll see the rates you've set up previously here. Let's jump straight in. Click to edit the United Kingdom zone. 

Under Shipping methods you'll see the Weight Based Shipping method that your store currently uses for the UK. Click to edit this.

Let's get started by adding the new Royal Mail 48 and Royal Mail 48 Recorded services.

Click the Add new button above these UK shipping rules. Enter 'Royal Mail 48' as the Label and Title.

The keyword we look for for this shipping method is '48', so make sure this is in the Label field. You can enter anything you like for the Title field really, but since the service name 'Royal Mail 48' says exactly what it is, it might be best to stick with this. 

Scroll down a little to define the destination and weight. 

Change the Destination to Specific and select United Kingdom. The order weight should be 0.00 to 0.099 kg, and check the 'or equal' box.

This weight bracket is the new lightweight weight for Royal Mail UK shipping, which currently includes all phone cases, socks and morfs. 

Finally, you'll need to define the price. We've entered a Base Cost of £0.86 since this is what Inkthreadable charge for the Royal Mail 48 lightweight service, but you should enter what you want to charge your customers here. 

Click Close. You've now set up the first rate for the Royal Mail 48 service! Next, you'll create rates for each weight bracket of this service. 

Check the box next to the Royal Mail 48 rate you've just created, and then click the Duplicate button. 

You'll see the duplicated rate appear below the one you've just create. Click to edit it.

The Label, Title and Destination will remain the same, but you'll want to alter the Order Weight and Base Cost. The next weight bracket is 0.1 to 0.1 kg, and the cost we'll be using is £1.22.

Update these fields, and then click the Close button. This shipping rule will have been updated, with your parameters and costs shown in the table! 

You'll now need to repeat this process for the remaining Royal Mail 48 weight brackets. The weights and costs we used are:

  • 0.101 to 0.399 kg - £2.86
  • 0.400 to 0.699 kg - £3.20

Remember, we're using the rates from our Shipping Costs page so your rates will likely be different. When finished you'll have something like this: 

That's the first Royal Mail 48 rates finished! Now we'll created the Royal Mail 48 Recorded rates. 

Check the box next to first three Royal Mail 48 rates and click the Duplicate button. This will create a duplicate of these three rates. This time, rather than editing the weight brackets you'll need to edit the Label, Title and Base Cost.

Click on the first duplicated rate and change the Label and Title to 'Royal Mail 48 Recorded'. 

The keyword we look out for for this service is '48 Recorded', so make sure this is in the Label field. Again, you can use anything you like for the title, but the name of the service says exactly what it is.

Ignore the weight bracket, and change the Base Cost to what you'd like to charge your customer. We've used the £2.41 rate Inkthreadable charges again.

Repeat this process for the second weight bracket, 0.1 to 0.1 kg. 

The third weight bracket will cover all weights from 0.101 to 0.699 kg, so for this rate you'll need to update the Label, Title, Order Weight and Base Cost. 

Update the Label and Title to Royal Mail 48 Recorded, and then edit the weight range so that it covers 0.101 to 0.699 kg. 

Finally, edit the Base Cost to what you'd like to charge your customers. We've use the Inkthreadable cost of £4.82 for this. Click the Close button. 

You've now added the new Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded services! 

With these rates completed, we'll move onto the Royal Mail 24 rates. This service is what we use for the 'Regular' service you've previously set up, and both the 'Regular' and '24' keywords will work. So at this point, you can either edit the rates you already have set up, or delete these and create new ones. 

It'll be quicker to start again since we can duplicate the Royal Mail 48 rates, so check the boxes for all Regular and Recorded shipping rules, and then click the Delete button.

Next, select the four 'Royal Mail 48' rates and duplicate them.

The weight brackets for these will remain the same for Royal Mail 24, but you'll need to update the Label, Title and Base Cost. 

Change the Label and Title fields to 'Royal Mail 24'. Remember, you can use the 'Regular' keyword instead if you want to, but you might as well use the new keyword and let your customers know exactly what service will be used. 

Scroll past the weight ranges to the Base Cost, and update this field to the price you'd like to charge your customers for this service. We've used Inkthreadable's rate of £1.13. Click Close when finished.

Repeat this process for the three remaining duplicated shipping rules, changing them to Royal Mail 24 in turn. When finished you'll have something like this: 

Now we'll create the 'Royal Mail 24 Recorded' rates, which will be replacing the 'Recorded' rates deleted a moment ago. 

Check the boxes for each of the new 'Royal Mail 24' shipping rules and click the Duplicate button. For these four new rates you'll need to update the Label, Title and Base Cost fields. 

The Label and Title will be 'Royal Mail 24 Recorded', and the Base Cost will depend on what you want to charge your own customer. We'll be using Inkthreadable's rates found on our Shipping Costs page.

When finished, you'll have something like this: 

The final step for your UK rates is updating the Courier costs, and you won't need to delete these to update them! 

Click the Courier rate that covers 0 to 0.6 kg. Update the Title to DPD Local (or DPD if you want to keep it simple) to let your customers know what service is used. The Label will stay as 'Courier'. 

Change the weight bracket to 0 to 0.699 kg, and the Base Cost to what you'd like to charge your own customers. Inkthreadable charge £5.23 for this service so that's what we'll use. Click the Close button. 

Finally, edit the Courier rate that covers 0.601 to 30 kg. Update the Title to DPD, and the weight range to cover 0.7 to 30 kg. Change the Base Cost to what you'd like to charge your customers - we'll use £8.48 for this.

And that's it! Your UK rates have now been updated to account for the new costs, new Royal Mail 48 services, and the new lightweight rate. You should be left with something like this: 

Make sure you click the Save changes button, or you'll have to do this all over again. 

Updating your Europe shipping rates, including adding the new tiered pricing

The new tiered pricing for parcels shipping by Courier to Europe means we'll have to scrap the current shipping rules set for Europe and start again. 

Thankfully, the Duplicate feature and the ability to define certain countries within a zone will come in very handy to help speed things up, but buckle in because this is a little more tedious than updating your UK rates. 

First, head back to your shipping zones. If you're not sure how you can click back to the Settings tab of your WooCommerce dashboard, then click the Shipping tab on the top menu.

Click to edit your zone for Europe, and then click to edit the Weight Based Shipping method you should already have set up. Delete any rates listed here. Since we're changing pretty much every rate and weight bracket it'll be less confusing starting again rather than trying to edit what we already have.

The 'Regular' and 'Recorded' shipping options will apply to all countries in this zone for Europe, but we'll then be creating five 'Courier' rates, each shipping to specific countries within this zone.

To get started, click the Add new button. Enter 'Regular' in the Label field, and 'Royal Mail 1st Class' as the Title. 

Scroll down. The Destination should be 'All allowed', and the weight range for this first rate needs to be 0 to 0.1 kg. 

Scroll down further to enter your Base Cost. We'l use £3.92 here, but you should enter what you want your customers to pay. Click the Close button.

That's the first rate set up for the lowest weight bracket. Next, duplicate this new rate. You'll want to edit the Order Weight range to 0.101 to 0.399 kg, and edit the Base Cost to what you'd like your customer to pay. Again, we'll use Inkthreadable's rate of £6.91. 

Duplicate one of these two rates again, then edit the Order Weight range to 0.4 to 0.699 kg, and the Base Cost to what you'd like your customers to pay. We've used Inkthreadable's rate of £9.42. 

When finished, you'll have completed the 'Regular' rates for Europe and they should look something like this: 

Next, we'll duplicate these 3 rates for the 'Recorded' shipping rules. Check each box and then click the Duplicate button. 

For each of these duplicates you'll need to change the Label, Title and Base Cost. 

Click to edit the first duplicated rate. Change the Label to 'Recorded', the Title to 'Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded', and the Base Cost to what you'd like your customers to pay. We've used Inkthreadable's rate of £8.78 for this service. Finally, click the Close button. 

Repeat this process for the remaining two duplicated rates, changing each to the 'Recorded' service in turn. When finished you'll have completed the 'Recorded' rates for Europe, and it'll look something like this: 

The final step for Europe is adding the five 'Courier' rates that will offer tiered pricing for courier delivery depending on the destination. 

Click the Add new button. The Label and Title should both be 'Courier'. You could enter DPD in the Title field if you wanted to, but since DPD work with different delivery partners throughout Europe it's likely not going to be DPD who deliver to the shipping address.

Scroll down to set the Destination countries. This is where familiarising yourself with the zones listed on our Shipping Costs page may come in handy.

Click the dropdown to change the Destination to 'Specific', and then select the six countries listed for Zone 1 on our Shipping Costs page: Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium & Luxembourg. 

Change the Order Weight range to 0 to 30 kg. 

Finally, scroll down and add the price you want your customers to pay in the Base Cost field. We've used Inkthreadable's rate of £8.70.

Click the Close button. You'll see this new rate listed, with the specified countries next to it.

You can either duplicate the rate for this first zone for zones 2 to 4, deleting the Destination countries and adding the correct ones as you go, or you can follow the same method as above to create them instead.

Remember to refer to the zones table on our Shipping Costs page and you'll have no trouble with this.

When you're finished with zones 2 to 4 you'll see something like this: 

Zone 5 will be slightly different. This zone includes any European countries that are not covered by zones 1 to 4, but there is no way to define this quickly. Instead, duplicate one of the previously completed rules for Courier.

Scroll to the Destination countries and delete any that are there. You will now need to manually enter every country not currently covered by the previous zones. These are: 

Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Russia, San Marino, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan & Vatican.

When you've added these countries you'll have something like this: 

Scroll down and change the Base Cost to what you'd like your customers to pay (we're using Inkthreadable's rate of £22.75) and then click Close. 

Make sure you click the Save changes button at the bottom! And that's it. Your rates for Europe are completed! You've edited your prices to account for the price increase, and you've added tiered pricing for Courier shipping to Europe.

Updating your shipping rates for the Rest of the World, including adding the new rates for USA

Head back to your shipping zones. If you're not sure how you can click back to the Settings tab of your WooCommerce dashboard, then click the Shipping tab on the top menu. 

Click the Add shipping zone button. This new zone will cover the USA. 

Enter USA as the Zone Name, and select United States as the Zone Region. Click the Add shipping method button, select Weight Based Shipping from the drop down menu, and then click the button to add the new method. 

Click to edit this new method, then click the Define new rules button.

The new lower rates for shipping to the USA are based on a new service we're offering, where parcels shipped from Inkthreadable are injected straight into the USPS delivery network. It speeds up shipping times and lowers shipping costs all in one go!

There's only one rate for this, we won't be offering 'Regular' and 'Recorded' — as standard, all parcels shipped to the USA will be tracked. You'll now need to set up two delivery methods for the USA, one for this service and one for Courier. 

Click the Add new button to add your first rule. The Label should be 'USPS' (this is the keyword we're looking for) and the Title should be something like 'USPS (Recorded)' to let the customer know what service it is.

Scroll down to the Destination. Select 'Specific' from the drop down menu, and then add United States. The first weight range for this delivery method is 0 to 0.099 kg.

Scroll down to the Base Cost and enter what you'd like your customers to pay. Inkthreadable's rate for this is £4.31. Click the Close button.

You'll now need to repeat this for each weight bracket for this service. It'll likely be quicker making duplicates of this first rate and changing the Order Weight range and Base Cost as needed. Remember to refer to our Shipping Costs page to decide how much you'd like to charge for each weight. The remaining weight brackets are: 

  • 0.100 - 0.100 kg
  • 0.101 - 0.199 kg
  • 0.200 - 0.299 kg
  • 0.300 - 0.399 kg
  • 0.400 - 0.499 kg
  • 0.500 - 0.599 kg
  • 0.600 - 0.699 kg

As you're working through these you'll notice the rate for 0.101 - 0.199 kg is higher than for those following it. This isn't a mistake. We've made the rates as cheap as possible, but each weight bracket cost is based on both weight and parcel size. 

The vast majority of parcels shipped in the 0.101 - 0.199 kg are mugs, which are much heavier than t-shirts. Based on the minimum and maximum weight of this bracket there are only two product combinations this will be used for: a single mug, or a t-shirt shipping with a lightweight accessory (socks, phone cases and morfs). Two t-shirts will hit the 0.200 - 0.299 kg weight bracket, so they'll ship at a cheaper rate. 

When you're finished you'll have something like this: 

Next, we need to add the Courier rate for the USA. Click the Add new button. 

The Label and Title should both be 'Courier'. The Destination should be 'Specific' to the United States, and the weight range is 0 to 30 kg. Inkthreadable charge £36.00 for this rate so this is what we've used.

Click the Close button, and that's your rates for the USA completed!

Remember to click the Save changes button to save your work here, or you'll have to do it all again.

Head back to your shipping zones (click back to the Settings tab of your WooCommerce dashboard, then click the Shipping tab on the top menu).

You'll see a zone that covers all countries that have not been defined in a previous zone. We'll use this to complete the rates for the rest of the world.

Click to edit this zone, and then click to edit the Weight Based Rates that should already be set up. Rather than editing the rates here, just delete them all. We'll be using the duplicate feature again to speed up recreating these. 

There are three services that ship to the rest of the world: 'Regular', 'Recorded', and 'Courier'. We'll need to set up rates that cover each of these. There are fewer weight brackets than for Europe though, so it's not a lot of work. We're on the home stretch. 

Click the Add new button to add your first rate. The Label should be 'Regular' and the Title should be 'Royal Mail 1st Class' to let your customer know which service will be used.

You can leave the Destination as 'All allowed', and the weight bracket for the first rate is 0 to 0.1 kg.

Enter what you'd like to charge for the Base Cost - we'll use Inkthreadable's rate of £5.01. Click the Close button.

You can now duplicate this rate for the two remaining weight brackets, editing the Order Weight range and Base Cost as needed for each (remember to check out our Shipping Costs to determine what you'd like to charge). The remaining weight brackets are: 

  • 0.101 to 0.399 kg
  • 0.4 to 0.699 kg

When finished you'll have something like this: 

You can now duplicate these three rates to create your 'Recorded' rates. Check the boxes next to each rate and click the Duplicate button. 

These rates will have the same Order Weight ranges, but you'll need to edit the Label, Title and Base Cost of each to create your 'Recorded' rates. Click to edit the first. 

Enter 'Recorded' as the Label, and 'Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded' as the Title to let your customers know what service will be used. 

Scroll past the Destination and Order Weight fields to the Base Cost, and change this to what you'd like to charge your customers for this weight bracket for the Recorded service. When finished, click the Close button.

Repeat this process for the two remaining duplicated rates, editing the Label, Title and Base Cost of each in turn. When finished you'll have something like this: 

The final step with your shipping rates is to create the Courier rate for the rest of the world. Click the Add new button and enter 'Courier' as the Label and Title. We'd advise against entering DPD in the Title field since it'll Lilly be a delivery partner that delivers in the destination country and not DPD themselves.

The Destination can be left as 'All allowed', and the weight range should be 0 to 30 kg. Inkthreadable charge £36 for this service so we've used that as the Base Cost. When finished, click the Close button.

Make sure you click the the Save changes button!

You've fished updating all of your WooCommerce shipping rates now! But there's one last task to complete before everything is completed. 

Updating your lightweight product weights 

We've added the new lightweight rate for UK shipping, but if you've previously exported products from Inkthreadable, specifically any phone cases, socks, or morfs, then you'll need to update the weight values of these products to make sure they ship with the new lightweight rate.

This will involve editing the products listed in your store, so head back to your WooCommerce dashboard and click Products. You'll see all of your products listed here. Unfortunately, there's no quick way to do what we need to do next, so settle in for a tedious task. 

The new lightweight range is 0 to 0.099 kg. The products that can now take advantage of this will actually have a weight value of 0.1, so we need to update these weights - for every single product variant that can ship using this lightweight rate. How long this will take will depend on how many products you have. We'll detail the procedure with one product.

Locate the first product you need to update and click to edit it. 

This 'The Terror Sisters' phone case can ship with the lightweight rate, and has multiple case size variants, so it's a great example. 

When the product details load, scroll down to the Product Data box and click on the Variations tab. 

Here you'll see each size variant for your product. Select one of your variants by clicking it.

This open a dropdown full of information about the product variant, including its weight; you'll see it listed as 0.1 kg. Update this Weight field to 0.090 kg.

Repeat this for each product variant, not only for the product you're currently updating but for every single product variant for any phone cases, morfs and socks listed in your store that were exported before the update.

Remember to click the Update button after making any changes to make sure the new variant weights are saved!

Once you've done this for all of your lightweight products, you've finished updating your WooCommerce shipping rates following our update! If we look back to that initial list of six tasks you'll see just how much you've accomplished: 

  • Increase shipping costs to match the new Inkthreadable costs - DONE!
  • Add the Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded services - DONE!
  • Add the new lightweight rates for UK - DONE!
  • Update current product weight values for lightweight rates - DONE!
  • Add the new European zones and rates - DONE!
  • Add the new shipping rates for the USA - DONE!
