Our shipping rate updates on the 25th March introduced a a few new things, aside from the general price increase for our current services.

In addition to the previous shipping options available you'll now have access to:

  • Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded to UK.
  • New lightweight rate to UK.
  • Tiered pricing for Courier to Europe.
  • Much cheaper rates for shipping to USA.

These new services have been introduced to offset price increases, and in most cases the new rates are cheaper than the before the update!

How does this affect my current shipping rates?

If you take no action, nothing will change and your shipping rates will still work as they currently do. Your customers will be charged the same rate on your store, and if your rates are set to match ours you will lose a little money on the shipping costs since we'll be charging you the new rates.

This means there's no major rush — take your time, consider whether or not you want to add the new rates to your store, and go from there. That being said, we'd definitely recommend adding the new rates since they offer cheaper shipping options for your customers.

Updating your current Shopify shipping rates

If we break it down, there are six things we need to add/update/do to take full advantage of the new rates:

  • Increase shipping costs to match the new Inkthreadable costs;
  • Add the Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded services;
  • Add the new lightweight rates for UK;
  • Update current product weight values for lightweight rates;
  • Add the new European zones and rates; and
  • Add the new shipping rates for the USA.

You can pick and choose which you want to add/update, so if you only want to add the new Royal Mail rates you can skip straight to that and ignore the rest. So, let's get started!

Updating your shipping costs in line with Inkthreadable's update and adding the new European zones

The price increase means we'll now charge slightly more for shipping, and this may or may not affect you depending on how you prices your shipping rates when you set them up.

For example, if you rounded up to the nearest whole Pound, you'd be charging £2 for a single t-shirt to the UK based on our old rate of £1.50. The new rate for a single t-shirt to the UK is £1.57, and if you were to round up to the nearest Pound it would still be £2.

Since shipping costs are subjective and different from customer to customer, there's no one right way to detail updating your costs — it will be up to you to review the new costs and decide how much to charge your customers. You can find all shipping costs detailed on our Shipping Costs page. Take some time to review these costs before updating!

Updating your rates for UK, Europe & Rest of World

Please note: the following will explain the process for updating your current rates, but not the process for adding the new rates mentioned above. This will be covered in a later step.

Once you know what you want to charge your customers, head to your Shopify dashboard and click the Settings button at the bottom (with a little cog next to it), and then click the Shipping button.

Here you will see all of the rates you've set up previously. Click the Edit button next to your UK rates.

The weight ranges have changed slightly, which means you'll need to reconfigure your rates to make sure you're charging your customers the right amount. We'll start with updating the UK. The new weight ranges are as follows:

Regular & Recorded

  • 0.1 kg
  • 0.101 - 0.399 kg
  • 0.4 - 0.699 kg

Courier

  • 0.0 - 0.699 kg
  • 0.7 - 30.0 kg

In our example, the first Regular and Recorded rates have the correct weight values, so we'll just need to edit the costs for these. The first weight we need to edit is the first Courier rate. Click edit next to this rate.

Going through your list of rates, edit the weight ranges to match the new ranges, and update the costs to what you'd like to charge. When finished you'll have something like the following, though your Rate amount will likely be different.

Make sure you click Save after updating your rates or you'll have to do everything again!

You'll now need to follow the same procedure for your European and Rest of World rates.

Editing your rates for shipping to Europe

Disclaimer: this is a bit tricker than updating your UK rates!

You'll need to add new zones to your Shopify shipping profile to allow for tiered prices for parcels shipped by Courier to Europe. This is going to involve creating 5 new shipping zones.

The way Shopify's system works means you'll need to break up countries into zones and add all available shipping rates for each zone, despite all but the courier rates being identical for each European country. It sounds more complicated than it is, so don't worry!

First things first; head back to your Shipping settings and click edit on the zone set up for Europe. Delete this zone by clicking the Delete zone button at the bottom. This will be easier than editing it for our needs.

Now, head back to the shipping zones page and click the Add shipping zone button towards the top of the page. Name this zone something like 'Europe Zone 1' to make it easy to identify.

The countries you'll be adding to these zones are detailed on our Shipping Costs page, so for this zone we're adding Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium & Luxembourg. use the search box to locate these countries, and add each to  the shipping zone by checking the box next to each one in turn.

To add the shipping rates for this zone, scroll down to the weight based rates and click Add rate.

Again, the weight ranges are the following:

  • 0.0 - 0.1 kg
  • 0.101 - 0.399 kg
  • 0.400 - 0.699 kg

Courier

  • 0 - 30.0 kg

For the price of each rate you'll need to consult our Shipping Costs and decide how much you'd like to charge, though in this example we've used the exact rate we charge.

The courier rate of £8.70 for zone 1 has been taken from our zone table on our Shipping Costs page. You find all rates listed here for each zone, with Zone 5 being the rate for any country not listed in Zones 1 - 4.

Click Save before leaving this page!

Now you'll want to repeat the process above for Zones 2, 3 & 4;

  1. Create a new rate and name it according to the zone you're creating.
  2. Add each country in the zone you're creating.
  3. Add the weight based rates for Regular & Recorded shipping.
  4. Add the Courier rate based on the cost listed in the zone table.
  5. Click Save!

Zone 5 will include all countries in Europe that haven't yet been accounted for. The process for setting it up is the same as above, but rather than adding individual countries you can select an option to add all European countries that haven't been added to another zone. Make sure you create this zone last, otherwise you'll need to delete it to create the other zones.

Create the new zone as above and name it 'Europe Zone 5'. When you click the Add countries button, scroll down a little to find the check box next to Europe. Check this box and you'll see all countries but those previously added to other zones selected.

Now you can set up your weight based rates as above, and use the Zone 5 courier cost of £22.75 to decide what to charge your customers.

That's it! Europe is complete! It was a bit tedious, but once finished you won't have to touch it again and you'll have something that looks like this:

Adding the new rates for shipping to the USA

Head back to your Shipping settings and click the Add shipping zone button. You'll create a zone that only includes the USA, and create weight based rates within this zone.

Name the zone 'USA' or something similar to help you identify it, and then add United States under Countries.

Since the new USA rate replaces the old Royal Mail services, there will only be two services we need to add for shipping to the USA: The USPS service, and the Courier service. Scroll down to the Weight based rates and click Add rate.

The keyword our system will look out for for the new rate is USPS, so enter USPS (Recorded) in the Name field, with a minimum and maximum weight of 0.00 kg and 0.099 kg respectively. We've used Inkthreadable's cost of £4.31 for this weight, so refer to our Shipping Costs page to determine your own costs for this.

Click Done. You'll now need to create weight based rates for each additional weight bracket, using our shipping costs to determine the rates you'd like to charge your customers:

  • 0.1 - 0.1 kg
  • 0.101 - 0.199 kg
  • 0.2 - 0.299 kg
  • 0.3 - 0.399 kg
  • 0.4 - 0.499 kg
  • 0.5 - 0.599 kg
  • 0.6 - 0.699 kg

Again, we've used Inkthreadable's rates for this so ours might look different to yours:

You might have noticed the rate for 0.101 - 0.199 kg is higher than for those following it. This isn't a mistake. We've made the rates as cheap as possible, but each weight bracket cost is based on both weight and parcel size.

The vast majority of parcels shipped in the 0.101 - 0.199 kg are mugs, which are much heavier than t-shirts. Based on the minimum and maximum weight of this bracket there are only two product combinations this will be used for: a single mug, or a t-shirt shipping with a lightweight accessory (socks, phone cases and morfs). Two t-shirts will hit the 0.200 - 0.299 kg weight bracket, so they'll ship at a cheaper rate.

Once you've finished with the USPS rates, the final step here is to add the Courier rate.

Click the Add rate button. Name this rate 'Courier', or something similar to let your customers know what it is, and the weight range should be 0 - 30 kg. The courier rate to the USA is the same as for any country outside of Europe, £36.00, so this is the rate we've used.

Click Done. That's your USA rates completed!

Editing your rates for shipping to Rest of World

Head back to your Shipping settings again and click edit next to the Rest of World zone.

Thankfully, this final step is a lot simpler than for Europe! After reviewing the new international shipping rates, decide how much you want to charge your own customers and edit your weight values and costs in the same way as you did for your UK rates.

The new weight ranges again are:

Regular & Recorded

  • 0.0 - 0.1 kg
  • 0.101 - 0.399 kg
  • 0.400 - 0.699 kg

Courier

  • 0 - 30.0 kg

When finished, you'll have something resembling this (but likely with different costs):

Remember to click Save before leaving this page or you'll need to do it all again!

And that's it! You've now updated all of your existing rates in line with the updates to our shipping rates, along with adding the new European courier zones for tiered rates to various European destinations.

Adding the new Royal Mail 48 services

These rates are only available for parcels shipping to the UK, which means these changes will only affect the shipping zone you'll have set up for the UK already.

Head to your Shopify dashboard and click the Settings button at the bottom (with a little cog next to it), and then click Shipping.

When your shipping zones load, scroll down and you'll see the zone currently set up for the UK - click to edit.

Please note: we'll just be covering adding the new rates at this step. We've covered updating your current rates above.

When you originally set up your shipping rates you'll have used specific keywords to make sure our system knows which shipping method to use for the order. The same goes for these new rates! We'll be updating our system to look out for the keywords '48',  '48 Recorded', '24' & '24 Recorded'. If these keywords aren't found the shipping method will default to Royal Mail 24 (our Regular service) so it's to vital that you update your keywords, but if you're adding the new Royal Mail 48 services it might help your customers with identifying the differences between shipping methods.

Scroll to your weight based rates and click Add rate. Name this 'Royal Mail 48', with a weight range of 0 - 0.1 kg and whatever price you'd like to charge (our rate is £1.22 for this weight range).

Repeat this for all weight ranges for the Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 services, if you'd like to offer both. You can find these rates listed on our Shipping Costs page. When finished you'll end up with something similar to this:

You can see here that we've updated the 'Regular' shipping option to 'Royal Mail 24', and the 'Recorded' option to 'Royal Mail 24 Recorded' just to represent a clear difference between the two shipping options (your customer will see these names).

Remember to click Save before leaving this page or you'll have to update these rates again.

Adding the new lightweight rates

These rates are only available for orders shipping to the UK, and will apply for any product with a points value of less than 100. Currently, these products are phone cases, morfs, and socks.

The first step is to edit the weight value of any of these products in your store. If you created any phone cases, socks, or morfs and linked them to your Inkthreadable account you will need to update their weight to make sure they ship with the new lightweight rate.

Luckily, Shopify has a feature that allows you to edit the details of each product variant at the same time: the Bulk Editor.

Click on Products in your Shopify dashboard and you'll see all your products listed. Use the check boxes to the left of each product to select any products you need to update the wights for - that's any product that uses our phone cases, morfs or socks.

Once you've selected all the products you want to update, click the Edit Variants button.

This will load the Bulk Editor. Here you can edit the weight value of each variant at once, making short work of the task.

When the bulk editor loads you may not see the Weight field by default. To add this field, click the Add fields drop down button, and then select Weight.

With the weight field available to edit, you should see each variant has a weight of 0.1kg. To edit this, click the top field, hold shift and click the bottom field to highlight each product variant's weight at once.

Then type 0.09, and you should see each field be updated at the same time!

Make sure you click the Save button before leaving this page. If you don't, it won't save, and you'll need to come back and repeat this process.

That's it! The weights for the products that can take advantage of the lightweight rate have now been edited. The next step is to add these lightweight rates to your Shopify shipping rates to make them available for your customers.

Head to your Shopify dashboard and click the Settings button at the bottom, the one with a little cog next to it, and then click the Shipping button.

Scroll through your shipping zones to find your UK zone and click edit.

Scroll down to your weight based rates and click the Add rate button.

You can find the costs for our new lightweight rates listed on our Shipping costs page. The first rate for Royal Mail 48 costs just £0.86 and we've used this for the first example.

If you followed the steps above about adding the Royal Mail 48 services to your Shopify shipping rates you'll know a little about the new rates and keywords. The Royal Mail 48 services are optional, as are all shipping methods, and if you opt to use it we'd recommend updating the names of your 'Regular' and 'Recorded' shipping rates to 'Royal Mail 24' & 'Royal Mail 24 Recorded' respectively, to help with your customer identifying the differences between the two methods.

Add this new weight range to your UK rates for Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 24 (if you want to offer both). You'll next need to edit your existing weight rage that covered 0 - 0.1 kg to instead cover 0.1 - 0.1 kg. This will avoid your customers being shown two separate shipping rates for the same parcel and service.

When you've added/edited all of these rates you'll have something that looks like this:

Remember to click save before leaving this page!

And that's it!

Your Shopify rates will now include the new lightweight rates, the new Royal Mail 48 services, the new tiered pricing for European destinations, and the new lower rates for the USA! if we look back to those initial six tasks you'll see just how much you've accomplished:

  • Increase shipping costs to match the new Inkthreadable costs - DONE!
  • Add the Royal Mail 48 & Royal Mail 48 Recorded services - DONE!
  • Add the new lightweight rates for UK - DONE!
  • Update current product weight values for lightweight rates - DONE!
  • Add the new European zones and rates - DONE!
  • Add the new shipping rates for the USA - DONE!
